Witness. Here is my Land Cruiser, which was pretty big in 1997, parked next to a new-ish Jeep Liberty. As you can see, the bumpers are roughly even.
Then we head over to the front...
And while the Cruiser is longer, it’s by about 5 inches and it’s basically all in the nose. So a small SUV now is almost as big as a big SUV from the 1990s. Neat.
That said, I’ll bet I outweigh him by 3/4 of a ton and get half as many miles per gallon.

We all know your Land Cruiser is much cooler than that Jeep though. :)

Becuase Bigger cars are safer....until your the one not driving the bigger car.

If you run the numbers, our cruiser is about the same size as a current 4Runner
Factor out the height of the lift and bigger tires and yeah...

And my second gen 4runner is noticeably smaller than my housemate’s newish RAV-4 and dwarfed my my other housemates’ newish Accord and Passat.

oh man, the 2nd and 3rd gens are tiny today.

If you think that about the Liberty, imagine parking next to our lifted Jeep Commander:
It’s the same body style as the Liberty....BUT BIGGER

Funny thing is that Jeep, and it’s sister Dodge Nitro are tiny on the inside. It’s like they were trying to make it feel more like an XJ and figured the best way was just to make the interior more cramped.

I almost bought a Commander. It looks great lifted.

That’s a fact.

Exactly, larger cars aren’t inherently safer, they’re safer at the expense of other vehicles (and their drivers). Basic physics.

That’s kinda hilarious. If I’m honest, my Cruiser isn’t as big inside as I thought it might be. It’s definitely not cramped, and I’m fat as shit, so that might be a me problem.

I will certainly not argue that point. I think the only vehicle I’ve had that I’d say is definitively cooler is a ‘69 Corvair, because it was such a DGAF car you had no choice but to think it was obscenely cool.

I’ve seen a Prius flip a full sized SUV like a flapjack. Just a little doink to the side and over that fat piece of American crap went. The woman who was driving the SUV crawled out and in total shock that a little car did that to her land yacht.

That’s basically dead on. Current 4Runner is a good looking truck...I always liked the wheels on that one.

The 3rd gen 4runner is just about the same size as one of these hideous things give or take 2 inches or so.

I’ll take the 4Runner. Ain’t even a question.
Also, 4Runner generations ranked: 1, 3, 2, 5, 4.

Oh yeah the 3rd gen is good. Although the 4th could be had with a V8.

That’s why I debated over ranking the 4th higher, but I just think it’s kinda awkward looking.

Yup
New vs old Cherokee

It’s almost absurd, I park in an extremely tight 6-car, double parked lot with three of my housemates and three friends who live next door(off-campus college living) and mine is by far the easiest to maneuver, including a newish Civic.

You have more interior space too due to...well, I’m not going to sugarcoat it, but a lot less safety features.

Thanks! We love it. Here it is in the wild:

Here’s a fun fact: the 2nd gen Forester is almost exactly the same size as the Patriot/Compass.
